This course will provide students with an overview of the current and historical theories explaining the causation of criminal and other deviant behavior. Critical evaluation and discussion of statistics on crime, crime victims, and categories of criminal offenses will be explored. The treatment and punishment of these criminal offenses will also be examined as well as the impact of police, judicial, and the correctional system on this treatment or punishment.
Students will be asked to communicate on a regular basis, sharing thoughts and ideas about current events, readings, and other criminal justice beliefs. They will also be responsible for reading and work from the book as well as research and essay type assignments.
